I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings - Maya Angelou

Short Film Project

This short film was conceived by Anecdote Films as a tribute to the greatly respected author and poet Dr. Maya Angelou. Many well known people contributed to the project and I was excited to work on creating all the graphics and animations for the film. I created and animated various illustrations which were woven throughout readings of a chapter from the book ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.’  Below are some excerpts from the film.

Inspiration and style guide

I began by creating a style guide for the project with a starting point of the original iconic book jacket design by Rachel Ake (based on an earlier design by Janet Halverson.) I created a color palette and added some fonts inspired by Dr. Angelou’s writing process, one a font I created based on her handwriting which was distinctive.
